Spring 2025: a thoughtful start

As the days warm and the snow melts, many of us are eager to get back into our gardens. But when is the right time to start? And how can we support the creatures that have overwintered in our spaces? I’ll explore these questions and share what’s new for NSBG in 2025. 😊🌸

My first flowers—these drooping beauties are hard to see so I picked a few for a new bud vase. Their fragrance is just as enchanting as their appearance—understated and delightful.

This will be my seventh year practicing ecological gardening. Each season, I’ve tried to do a little ‘more and better’ than the last. Over time, I’ve learned that even small changes—like leaving milkweed stems standing through winter—can have a big impact. Birds use those long, peeling fibers to build their nests. Its a small thing that I know and see and appreciate.

I’m taking one last class before the season gets into full swing - UMass Amherst Extension Pollinator Steward Certification Program and finishing my winter reading. And then….before I start any work outside, I am going to reflect on what 'more and better' will look like for me in 2025.

A thoughtful start  🌸 🦋 🌱

As the days warm and the snow melts we are going to want to get out and garden. But this is not yet. It’s not until daytime temps are at least 50 degrees for 5 consecutive days AND ideally night time temps are also warmer.  While we wait for consistently warm days, there’s still plenty to do to set up for a great season.

What to do in the meantime.

  • pick up trash

  • pick up large branches/sticks and relocate to the back of a bed. think about if they’d look nice as a border for a garden path

  • outdoor container maintenance

  • get bags of compost and worm castings for raised be veg garden

  • plan spaces

  • order seeds

  • think about ways to enjoy your gardens that don’t involve gardening - plant/insect/bird ID, meditation, writing, entertaining, photography…

  • plan how you will use and appreciate your space. Do you need a new chair or pathway or something else?

New: Friday Socials with NSBG.

Garden-inspired cosmopolitan. 😊🌿🍸

This season I will be hosting twice monthly Garden Socials at my property in downtown Hamilton (dates TBD). I’ll serve a garden-inspired beverage and snack, like a hyssop garden cosmopolitan garnished with edible flowers.

These gatherings will be a chance to explore my gardens, sip a seasonal drink, and ask any questions about plants, design, or ecological gardening practices.

2025 Start Dates

Over the next couple of weeks I’ll be reaching out directly to everyone I worked with last year. We’ll discuss start dates and what could be your ‘more and better’ for 2025.
